At VHS Hospice, we believe that compassionate support and meaningful connection make a difference in the lives of patients and families. Guided by our core values of Passion, Respect, and Excellence, our Patient Care Volunteer provides companionship, emotional support, and respite services as part of our hospice team.

Responsibilities for Patient Care Volunteer:

• Provide assigned companionship and respite services to patients and families, offering caregivers time for rest and personal needs.

• Offer emotional support and compassionate presence to patients and loved ones throughout the end-of-life journey.

• Apply hospice training to support patients and families experiencing death, dying, grief, and loss.

• Communicate sensitively and respectfully with each patient and family.

• Participate as a member of the interdisciplinary group (IDG) as requested.

• Collaborate with hospice team members regarding patient and family needs and the established plan of care.

• Accurately document volunteer services provided.

• Notify the Volunteer Coordinator when unable to provide assigned services.

• Maintain patient and family privacy and confidentiality.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED preferred.

• Completion of the hospice volunteer training program required.

• Willingness to work collaboratively as part of the hospice team.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and follow the established volunteer role and plan of care.

• Flexibility, emotional stability, and the ability to manage emotionally sensitive situations.

• Previous volunteer experience or experience with grief and bereavement preferred.

• Ability to perform essential duties with appropriate adaptive devices or accommodations as needed.

• Ability to work in patient care environments where exposure to odors, blood, bodily fluids, adverse environmental conditions, or hazardous materials may occur, following hospice safety procedures.

• Current valid driver’s license, auto liability insurance, and reliable transportation required.
