Job Description: Financial Counselor

Financial Counselor Job Summary:

The Financial Counselor will work directly with and on behalf of any patient that requires assistance with payment plans, charity applications, insurance and/or any related billing/balance questions, ensuring all patient due balances are paid in full, timely and/or rectified fully through other means all while maintaining a high level of customer service.

  • Full Time

  • Days; Monday-Friday

Financial Counselor Essential Accountabilities:

  • Monitors and maintains patient due balance accounts, including but not limited to assisting with billing and insurance questions, setting up payment plans, coverage coordination, charity applications, and other patient financial assistance programs.

  • Assists patients with generating pricing estimates for various services.

  • Able to review and understand facility aging balances, identifying trends in payments and/or needs related to cash collection activities.

  • Identifies present and potential future bad debt, mitigating financial loss where possible.

  • Review Explanation of Benefit correspondences and/or Remittance Advice documents with patients.

  • Identifies patients with potential need for charity assistance; coordinating the application process, ensuring all required documents are in place for management review

  • Identifies and communicates any/all significant financial issues on a case-by-case basis with providers as well as management, in order for appropriate arrangement to be made for patients demonstrating consistent lack of follow through on patient due balances/bad debt

  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of hospital and clinic billing including UB and HCFA 1500 billing formats, regulatory compliance, CPT coding, HCPS coding, ICD-10 coding and managed care contract methodology.in order to be able to identify and reply to patient concerns.

  • Coordinates any/all bad debt accounts with outside vendors; ensuring appropriate account placement.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Financial Counselor Department Specific Accountabilities:

  • Adhere to the organization's Corporate Compliance program as it relates to billing and collections. , carrying out position responsibilities consistent with program guidelines, and reporting any violation of Corporate Compliance.

  • Works equally well with patients, providers, clinical, management and peers in identifying and rectifying patient balance concerns.

  • Excellent Telephone and face to face communication with patients of all ages and financial means

  • Able to handle difficult situations up to and including diffusing difficult conversations.

Financial Counselor Qualifications:

Education/Licensure/Certifications:

  • High School Diploma and/or equivalency required

  • Associate's in business management and/or Financial related preferred.

Skills:

  • High level of literacy with personal computers, including prior experiences importing & exporting data files

  • Demonstrated abilities using Microsoft Excel at a user’s level with entry level skills on spreadsheet creation

  • Excellent interpersonal skills demonstrated through interactions within teams, with staff and management, presentations.

  • High level of accountability, willingness to learn, and enthusiasm. Ability to independently and proactively inquire and check-in with manager regarding progress updates. Must be comfortable with a fast paced, free flowing environment with a strong degree of autonomy.

Discretion/Latitude/Decision-Making:

  • Exercise independent judgement. Work affords opportunities to act independently on assigned tasks required to meet expected goals.

Physical Working Conditions:

  • Sitting: 80%

  • Walking/Standing: 20%

  • Must be able to communicate in person and on telephone with conversational volume and tone.
